International Nurses Day (IND) is an international day celebrated around the world on 12 May every year since 1965, to mark the contributions nurses make to society.
Nurses have an enormous amount of knowledge and many diverse skills they spend years perfecting and developing, all the time working in decidedly tough environments where extreme stress is just a part of the job. Nurses help bring new life into the world, care tirelessly for the sick and injured, and sometimes watch the patients they did everything to save pass away despite their best efforts. Acknowledge the hard work, long hours, and emotional duress that are part of the life of every nurse on International Nurses Day.
If you are feeling especially grateful for the way a certain nurse took care of you (fed you, brought you a blanket, cleaned vomit off of you, monitored your vital signs, made sure you were getting the right pills, changed your wound dressings, helped you get to the bathroom , or any of the hundreds of other things nurses do),international nursed day is the day to show that gratitude. So, Because this day is all about celebrating nurses’ endless contributions to society, take this opportunity to show a nurse who has taken care of you how much you appreciate him or her. Many people neglect to thank their nurses at all, seeing them only as robots who only know how to follow the doctor’s orders, so every little way to say a simple “thank you” will definitely make that nurse’s day.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN) believes that health is a human right. ICN is at the forefront of advocating for access to health and nurses are the key to delivering it. All over the world, there are individuals and communities who are suffering from illness due to a lack of accessible and affordable health care. But we must also remember that the right to health applies to nurses as well! We know that improved quality and safety for patients depends on positive working environments for staff. That means the right to a safe working environment, adequate remuneration, and access to resources, and education. We must add to this the right to be heard and have a voice in decision making and policy development implementation! (Annette Kennedy President, International Council of Nurses)
Nurses are essential in transforming health care and health systems so that no person is left behind. Nurses can be a voice to lead by improving access to care; enabling a people– centred approach to health; and by ensuring their voices are heard in influencing health policy, planning and provision. It is now time to stand together and speak as one. We must speak louder. We need to speak clearer. With the resources that we currently have available to us, it is no longer acceptable to deny any human the right to health care. Make Your Voice be a voice to lead for health is a human right.
